VISITING CURATOR 4/03: KATE MCNAMARA

Kate McNamara is Director and Chief Curator at the Boston University Art Gallery. She is also a co-founder of Cleopatra's, a Brooklyn-based project space. She received her M.A. at The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and a B.A. with a Curatorial Concentration from Hampshire College, MA. Kate has held curatorial positions at MoMA PS1, New York; AIR Antwerpen, Belgium; and Participant, INC., New York.

VISITING ART CRITIC: NUIT BANAI

Dr. Nuit Banai is an art historian and critic who received a PhD in Art History from Columbia University before joining Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2007. Her research interests focus on the post-war and contemporary construction of new publics through the visual arts, especially in Europe and the Middle East. Her writings have appeared in catalogues for the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Barbican Art Gallery in London, Artists Space, Bronx Museum for the Arts, and the Americas Society in New York City.

Dr. Banai has been an invited critic at MIT, Massachusetts College of Art + Design, Rhode Island School of Design, Art Institute of Boston, Yale University, and Haifa University in Israel and has lectured at New York University,  The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University, The Digital Art Lab for Israeli Art in Holon,  l’Institut Nationale d’Histoire de  l’Art in Paris, The Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York City, The International Center for Photography in New York City, The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, and The Alvar Aalto Academy in Jyväskylä, Finland.

She served as Assistant Editor of the journal RES: Anthropology and Aesthetics (2002-2005), is a regular contributor to Artforum International, a Contributing Editor for Art Papers, and has written forArt Journal, Frieze, Modern Painters, and Time Out New York. Most recently, she contributed catalog essays to the exhibition “Arturo Herrera: Les Noces” at the Americas Society in New York (2011), “Vlatka Horvat: As Opposed to the Front, Back, Top and Bottom” at Bergen Kunsthall (2011) and to the Singapore Bienniale: Open House (2011). An essay titled “Simulating Iraq: Cultural Mediation and the Effects of the Real,” is forthcoming in the journal Public Culture. Dr. Banai recently completed a manuscript on Yves Klein for the Critical Lives series published by Reaktion Books.

 HOMEWORK due 1/31:

• Bring 3 Jpegs (quality not important) of recent work to next class in folder labeled with your full name on a Flash Drive or disk. Be prepared to speak briefly about your work in class on.

Tuesday 1/31

CLASS WORK:

• Each student will show 3 slides of recent work and talk briefly about it. (4 minutes each)
• 2 volunteers will take notes for each presentation and give those notes to presenter as reference for writing an artist statement.
• We will go over the artist statement and how to write it.

 HOMEWORK due 2/07:

• Sit in front of your actual work and write about it as objectively as possible. Refer to class handouts to help you structure your ideas.
• Bring statement draft along with 3 paintings or works on paper that best represent your overall body of work to class on 2/07.

 Tuesday 2/07

CLASS WORK

• Each student will sit and write about another student’s work for the first part of class.
• We will read and discuss both statements in relationship to each body of work.

HOMEWORK due SUNDAY 2/12

• Write a final draft of artist statement based on group feedback and EMAIL TO ME along with 3 professional quality images (1024 x768 pixels at 300 dpi): lesparx@gmail.com
